We're All Hiding Something
Here’s a little truth. Everyone’s social media looks amazing. Best coffee, best kids, best vacation. Scroll past the filters though, and you’ll find something far more interesting. Real life, with all its beautiful mess.
We all carry more inside us than we show the world. Sometimes we hide things from the people we love, and sometimes we even hide things from ourselves. Far from being a flaw, it’s actually what makes us interesting.
The people who seem to have it all figured out rarely do. The ones who look the most put together are often carrying the heaviest things. We curate. We protect. We show the world the version of ourselves we most want to be seen as. And underneath that carefully arranged surface, there’s almost always a richer, more complicated story.
The best characters in fiction work exactly the same way. They have layers and secrets. They have the face they show the world and the one they wear when no one is watching. And when those two things finally collide, that’s where a story catches fire.
That space between who we appear to be and who we actually are is one of my favorite places to write from. It’s at the heart of my novel Conviction, where beliefs blur reality and everyone has something to protect. It’s also the quiet engine of the new book taking shape right now.
When appearance and reality finally meet on the page, something electric happens. The kind of reading where hot coffee goes cold and the world outside disappears without you even noticing.
That kind of writing resonates with me. I’d love to know what resonates with you. What do you carry that the world doesn’t see? Share a comment and let’s talk.
